Why WebP files are everywhere now
Google built WebP to make websites load faster. A WebP image is typically 25–35% smaller than a JPEG at the same visual quality, which adds up to a real difference in how quickly pages load. All major browsers support it, so visitors never notice — the problem only shows up when you save one of those images and try to open it somewhere outside the browser.
Apps that still don’t open WebP
- Adobe Photoshop before version 23.2 (released early 2022)
- Microsoft Office before the 2022 channel update
- Most email clients — the recipient gets a download prompt rather than seeing the image inline
- Windows Photo Viewer on Windows 7 and Windows 8
What about WebP files with a transparent background?
WebP can store transparency, but JPG can’t. If the WebP file you’re converting has transparent areas, they’ll be filled with white in the JPG output. That’s usually fine for photos, but if you need the transparency to survive, use the WebP to PNG converter instead.
