Why your iPhone photos won't open on Windows
Back in 2017, Apple switched the iPhone camera to save photos as HEIC instead of JPEG. The reason was straightforward — HEIC files are roughly half the size of a JPEG at the same quality, which saves a lot of space on your phone over time. That works great until you try to open one on a Windows PC, send it to someone who doesn't use Apple devices, or upload it to a website that just says “invalid file type.”
Where HEIC works fine
- iPhone, iPad, and Mac — no issues at all
- iCloud and the Apple Photos library
- AirDrop between Apple devices
Where you’ll run into trouble
- Windows without the HEIF codec installed
- Email — recipients often can’t view the attachment
- Upload forms that only accept JPG or PNG
Converting multiple files at once
You can drop several HEIC files at the same time and they all convert together. If one file has a problem it won’t hold up the rest. Once everything is done, the download grabs all of them as a ZIP. Both .heic and .heif files are accepted — no need to rename anything before you start.
