PDF text extraction isn't the same as OCR — and that gap trips people up constantly

When a PDF was created from a Word document, an InDesign file, or any other digital source, there's a text layer baked right into it. You can't always see it in the UI, but it's the same layer that makes Ctrl+F search work inside the PDF viewer. This tool pulls from that layer directly. No image rendering, no character recognition, no probability scores. The words you get back are exactly what the original author typed.

Scanned PDFs are a completely different situation. A scanned PDF is just a stack of page photographs. No text layer exists. Upload one here and you'll get an empty or nearly empty .docx back, because there's nothing for the extractor to find. The fix: run an OCR pass on the PDF first — that adds a hidden text layer on top of each page image — then convert. OCR accuracy depends heavily on the scan itself. A clean 300 DPI scan of typed text converts accurately. A phone photo of a handwritten note taken at an angle converts badly, no matter what tool you use.

How paragraphs and headings are inferred
Text positioning and font size differences inside the PDF give the extractor enough signal to separate headings from body text. It's a heuristic, not a guarantee. Normal business documents, academic papers, and reports come out well. PDFs with decorative fonts, oversized pull-quotes, or unconventional layouts may need manual heading cleanup in the Word file after conversion.
What doesn't come through
Images embedded in the PDF are not included in the Word output. Tables lose their cell borders and come out as spaced plain text most of the time. Multi-column layouts collapse into single-column. Anything that relied on absolute pixel positioning in the original PDF will need manual fixing. That's not a limitation of this tool specifically — it's just the nature of converting from a fixed-layout format to a reflowable one.
Output compatibility
Standard .docx format — opens without any plugin in Microsoft Word 2010 and later, Google Docs, and LibreOffice Writer.
