Why the PNG ends up bigger than the WebP
If a 200KB WebP comes out as a 900KB PNG, that’s not the tool doing something wrong — that’s just how the formats work. WebP uses aggressive lossy compression to keep files small. PNG doesn’t compress the pixel data like that, so the file is bigger. You’re trading file size for the fact that no further quality loss is introduced when you save it as PNG.
Go with PNG when
- The WebP has a transparent background you need to keep
- You’re going to edit the image and save it again
- The destination needs a lossless format
Go with JPG instead when
- File size matters more than perfect quality
- There’s no transparency to worry about
- You’re sending it by email or uploading to social media
Does converting WebP to PNG add any quality loss?
No. The PNG file is an exact copy of what the WebP decoder produces. If the original WebP used lossy compression, that quality reduction already happened when the WebP was first created — this conversion doesn’t make it any worse. What you get in the PNG is exactly what was in the WebP, pixel for pixel.
