What even is a .jfif file?

If you right-clicked an image in Chrome or Edge and saved it, and it ended up as a .jfif file instead of a .jpg — that’s a browser quirk, not a different image format. JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. The image data inside is plain JPEG. The weird extension comes from a Windows registry setting that some browser versions trigger when saving certain images. The photo itself is completely normal.

How the conversion works

  1. Read the JFIF file — the tool opens it and finds the JPEG data inside, which is identical to any regular .jpg photo.
  2. Decode the pixels — the JPEG compression is unpacked into raw pixel colours in memory.
  3. Write a PNG file — those pixels get saved as a lossless PNG with no second round of compression on top.

Can I just rename it to .jpg instead?

Yes, honestly. In most cases just renaming .jfif to .jpg works fine because the data inside is already JPEG. The main reason to convert to PNG instead is if you want a lossless copy, need transparency support, or are going to edit and re-save the file multiple times and don’t want quality to degrade each time.
