Should you convert HEIC to PNG or JPG?

Most of the time, JPG is the simpler answer. It's smaller, opens everywhere, and is perfectly fine for sharing photos. But there are a few cases where PNG is genuinely the better call. If your iPhone photo has a transparent cutout — like a background-erased sticker you made in the Photos app — saving it as JPG will fill that transparent area with white and the cutout is gone forever. PNG keeps the transparency intact.

When the transparency actually matters

If you took a portrait photo and used the “Remove Background” feature in Photos, the HEIC file has an alpha layer saved with it. Converting that to JPG silently destroys the cutout. Converting to PNG keeps it, so you can drop the image onto any background in Photoshop, Canva, or wherever without a white box showing up behind the subject.

What about file size?

24-bit PNG
Full colour photo — good quality, but the file will be noticeably larger than the original HEIC or an equivalent JPG.
8-bit PNG
Only 256 colours — much smaller, but photos with skin tones or sky gradients will look blocky and banded. Not recommended for photos.
