Choosing the right pixel size for your SVG export
SVG files don’t have a fixed pixel size — they’re designed to be resolution-independent. When you export to PNG, you’re picking a specific size to render at. The good news is you can run the same SVG through multiple times at different sizes and each output will be just as sharp. A 16x16 favicon and a 1024x1024 app icon from the same SVG file will both look perfect.
Transparency is kept
Any part of your SVG that has no fill or is set to transparent will come out as a transparent pixel in the PNG. Semi-transparent shapes also carry through correctly. This is the main reason to pick PNG over JPG for SVG exports — you won’t get an unwanted white rectangle behind your logo or icon.
Common icon sizes to know
- Browser favicon — you typically need 16px, 32px, and 48px versions bundled into an .ico file.
- iOS App Store — Apple asks for sizes from 20x20 all the way up to 1024x1024; run your SVG through at each size you need.
- Android adaptive icon — the foreground layer should be 108x108dp, with important content kept inside a 72dp centre zone.
