LibreOffice Impress converts the PDF server-side. Each PDF page becomes a slide. Text blocks and images are extracted as individual slide elements — not flattened into a background image — so the resulting .pptx has editable text boxes and repositionable images. That said, the fidelity depends entirely on how the source PDF was created.
What converts well, what doesn’t
PDFs exported from PowerPoint or Keynote reconstruct cleanly because the element positioning is predictable. PDFs printed from Word, InDesign, or a browser produce less clean results — text blocks may split across unexpected boundaries, and font substitution is common if the original used a custom typeface the server doesn’t have. Scanned PDFs produce a slide with a page image and no editable text at all; run OCR on the PDF first to create a text layer.
Slide content that transfers
- Paragraph text and heading text as editable text boxes.
- Embedded images positioned to match their PDF locations.
- Basic shape outlines where vector graphics are present.
Speaker notes
An Include Notes toggle extracts any text annotation or notes layer from the PDF and places it in the corresponding slide’s notes pane — useful for PDFs originally exported from presentations that had speaker notes. If your PDF has no notes layer, the toggle has no effect.
