Why filler text exists in design and development
When you're building a layout, real copy almost never exists yet. Someone has to design the page before the writer finishes the content, or test the typography before the final words are approved. Putting repeated generic words everywhere is distracting. Random keysmashing is too short and breaks naturally at unexpected lengths. Standard filler text works because it's long enough to flow like real text, varied enough to create natural paragraph rhythm, and completely meaningless — so no one reads it looking for actual information. That's the whole point. The eye processes the layout; the brain ignores the words. It's been the typesetting standard since the 1500s for exactly this reason.
Paragraphs vs sentences vs words — pick the right unit for what you're filling
Use paragraphs when you need to fill a text block with realistic-length content. Use sentences when you need something shorter — a card description, a subtitle, a tooltip. Use words when you're filling a label or a button that has a character constraint. The "start with classic opening" toggle is worth leaving on when you're showing a client; they immediately recognize it as filler and don't try to read it as real copy. Turn it off if you want less recognizable filler, or if you're testing something algorithmically and need consistently random text without the fixed opening.
