A numeronym takes a long word, keeps the first and last letters, and replaces everything in between with the count of removed letters. internationalization → i18n. That's it. The formula is always first-letter + (total letters − 2) + last-letter. It's not an acronym; there are no initials involved. It's a shorthand for a single word that became too common in developer documentation to keep writing out in full. a11y came from "accessibility," k8s from "Kubernetes," o11y from "observability." These feel like insider shorthand because they are — they emerged from developer culture where people type a lot and certain words appeared in every other sentence.

Useful when you write the same long word repeatedly in documentation or comments

If you're writing technical docs and the word "serialization" appears forty times, s13n saves a few seconds per instance and reduces the visual bulk of dense paragraphs. Paste any word in here and the numeronym comes out immediately. Multi-word input generates a numeronym per word. The one caveat is that numeronyms only make sense to readers who already know the original word — using i18n in front of a non-technical audience or a client who hasn't seen it before will cause confusion, not clarity. They're for teams and internal docs, not public-facing copy or external communications.
