What slugification actually changes

A slug converter applies a fixed sequence of transforms: lowercase the entire string, transliterate accented and non-Latin characters to their nearest ASCII equivalent (so café becomes cafe and München becomes munchen), replace spaces and most punctuation with hyphens, collapse consecutive hyphens into one, and strip any leading or trailing hyphens. The result is a string safe to use directly in a URL path segment without any additional encoding.

The transliteration step is the one that most home-built slugifiers get wrong. Simply calling .toLowerCase().replace(/s+/g, '-') works for plain ASCII but silently drops accented characters or percent-encodes them, producing ugly or broken URLs for non-English content.

Slug length and SEO

Search engines read slug words as ranking signals. Keep slugs between 3 and 5 meaningful words, lead with the primary keyword, and drop stop words (a, the, of, in) when they add no value. Avoid date-stamped slugs like /2024/03/15/post-title unless you intend to publish time-sensitive content — dateless slugs stay relevant longer and don't require redirects when you republish evergreen articles.

Once a slug is indexed, changing it requires a 301 redirect from the old path. This tool lets you preview the slug before publishing so you can settle on the final form without accumulating redirect chains later.
