How the AI actually separates subject from background — and where it still struggles
The model behind this tool is a semantic segmentation network trained on tens of millions of images. It doesn't use colour thresholding or a magic-wand selection that picks connected pixels of similar colour. Instead it predicts, for every pixel in your image, a probability that the pixel belongs to the foreground subject. That's why it can handle a white cat against a pale grey wall — a colour-based approach would completely fail — while a segmentation model has learned what "subject" means across different shapes, lighting conditions, and backgrounds. The result is a per-pixel alpha mask rather than a binary cutout.
The hair problem and what alpha matting does about it
Hair is the hardest case in background removal, and it's why the alpha matting option exists. A strand of hair is partially transparent — light passes through it, the background colour bleeds into it, and the boundary between hair and background is never a clean line. A simple segmentation mask makes hair look like a clipped helmet silhouette. Alpha matting runs a second pass focused specifically on the edge region identified by the first pass: it estimates how much of each edge pixel belongs to foreground versus background and assigns a fractional alpha value instead of 0 or 1. The result is hair that retains its fine detail and blends naturally whether you put it on a white background or a photograph. Enable alpha matting for portraits, pets, and anything with wispy or fine-textured edges. Skip it for solid objects — product shots, furniture, geometric shapes — where it adds processing time without visible benefit.
Transparent PNG vs white background vs custom background
Transparent PNG is what you want when the image will be placed onto a surface whose colour you don't control yet — a website theme that might change, a presentation template, a design file. White background is the right choice for e-commerce: Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and most other marketplaces require product images on a clean white background and will reject or downrank listings that don't meet this standard. A JPEG with a white background is also significantly smaller than a transparent PNG of the same image, which matters for page load time across a product catalogue. Custom background is useful when you want to do a single-step replacement — drop the subject directly onto a studio texture, a branded colour field, or an environmental photo — without needing a separate compositing tool.
