Why GIF still wins on compatibility even in 2026

APNG was finalised as an unofficial PNG extension in 2008 and reached full browser support only in 2017 when Microsoft Edge shipped it. Every email client, every SMS preview renderer, every Slack workspace, and every legacy application that handles images was built around GIF long before APNG existed. That installed base of compatible decoders is the practical reason to convert APNG to GIF when you need the animation to display reliably everywhere, not just in a modern browser tab.

What changes during the conversion and what stays the same

Frame count and timing
All frame delays from the APNG fcTL chunks are read and mapped directly to GIF extension block delay fields, so the animation plays at identical speed in the output file.
Color palette
APNG stores up to 16.7 million colors per frame; GIF caps at 256. The converter builds a per-frame palette using Wu quantization, which clusters similar colors before discarding them. Visible banding appears most on photographs and smooth gradients — it is minimal on solid-color illustrations and pixel art.
Transparency
APNG supports full 8-bit alpha (256 opacity levels). GIF supports only binary transparency: each pixel is either fully opaque or fully invisible. A transparency threshold setting lets you choose the alpha cutoff point — pixels above the threshold become opaque, pixels below become transparent.
File size
GIF uses LZW compression on the indexed color data. Small APNG files with few colors often grow slightly in the GIF version because LZW is less efficient than DEFLATE (used in PNG). Large APNG files with many frames may shrink because the 256-color palette cap reduces total data volume before LZW is applied.

Telegram sticker conversion notes

Telegram animated stickers are 512×512 APNG files exported from Lottie JSON at 60 fps. Converting directly to GIF at 60 fps produces files over 10 MB. Drop to 24 fps and 256 px output width to get under 1 MB while keeping the sticker readable at chat thumbnail size. Signal stickers follow the same 512×512 APNG format and the same size constraints apply.
